I enjoyed a day at the beach and in Asbury Park yesterday, and at the end of the day, as I was walking back to my car, I noticed this red-leafed tree with a plaque in the ground (below left). As I looked closer, the plaque says “In Honor of Andy Warhol.”

This doesn’t make any sense to me, as I’m not aware of any connection between Andy Warhol and Asbury Park. Plus, there’s nothing about this tree – located on 5th Avenue on the edge of Sunset Park – that suggests Andy Warhol. Does anyone know anything about this tree or dedication? If so, please share info in the comments section below. (* and see more from our research below the picture)

Andy Warhol tree and plaque on 5th Avenue in Asbury Park

* I did find one potential explanation: there is a summer residency and exhibition program based in Asbury Park called “Siren Arts” that supports emerging visual artists throughout the northeast corridor of Washington, DC to NYC. This program has received a curatorial grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, so perhaps this tree dedication is in response to that support?
