New shows making the list include Loose Units: The Podcast. Comedian and writer Paul Verhoeven interviews his father, John, a former Sydney police detective, and the weekly show is a deserved favourite. Each episode discusses gruesome true crime stories with gallows humour, but never disrespects the stories or the real humans involved.

Gertie’s Law is my favourite podcast of 2019, and I hope this timeless look at the people working in Victoria’s Supreme Court continues to find new listeners for years to come.

Parental As Anything, with Maggie Dent should be compulsory listening for any parent, and I’m glad to see it recognised. Other ABC Studios productions to make the list include Take 5, in which Zan Rowe interviews musicians about their five favourite songs, and Unravel True Crime: Snowball, the year’s most surprising true crime series. Snowball also takes out the best true crime show, overall.

We Fact Up is new to me. The show has a simple concept; the hosts are asked random questions from listeners and must answer them without support from Google. A fun, clever twist on the trivia podcast.

The best surprise on the list was the winner of Apple’s best fiction show. Until last week, I’d never heard of Love and Luck, a podcast that tracks a relationship over voicemail messages. But in a world full of true crime podcasts and anti-heroes and dark storylines, Love and Luck is a breath of fresh air. After just a few episodes, I’ve found the acting superb, the characters endearing and relatable, and the script wonderfully observed. And each episode is a short 10 minutes or so, making it a perfect story to catch over Christmas break.
