While that trio of offerings did not earn the 34-year-old the same attention and ubiquity as her 2011 single Call Me Maybe, they have won her a passionate army of social media fans who will argue to the death that Jepsen makes the best pure pop music on the planet.
Listen to those albums and it’s difficult to argue. Go see Jepsen live and you’re almost sure to become a true believer. Her voice on stage at the Forum was flawless, even while scurrying about, stepping on and off stage monitors.
Run Away With Me (recently ranked the 36th best song of the decade by Pitchfork) was the third song of the night. Like a lot of her songs, it’s basically one long bridge and chorus repeated, and it pops the crowd into a frenzy from which it never really cools.
An a capella sing-a-long to conclude When I Needed You was another highlight, as were main set closers Boy Problems and Party For One.
Real Love – the closest thing all night to a ballad – soared into dance mode eventually as it opened the encore, while Let’s Get Lost and Cut To The Feeling ended Jepsen’s set to a burst of hysteria.
