Australia’s best young writers are eligible to share a $10,000 pool of prize money after The Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Australian Novelists awards secured sponsorship for the first time.

The awards were launched in 1997 by former Herald  literary editor Susan Wyndham to showcase emerging writing talent.

Thanks to a grant from the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund, the winner for the next three years will receive $8000 and two runners-up will each pocket $1000.

Past winners include James Bradley, Mandy Sayer, Christos Tsiolkas, Gillian Mears, Craig Silvey, Emily Maguire, Markus Zusak, Omar Musa, Nam Le and Hannah Kent.
