This year isn’t the first time Diary of a Wimpy Kid has snapped-up the most Christmas sales. Kinney’s beloved series also topped the December book sale charts in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The series has been running since 2007 and the American author has so far released at least one instalment per year.

Other titles that made the top 10 Christmas bestseller list include comedian Kitty Flanagan’s 488 Rules for Life; Jamie Oliver’s vegetarian cookbook, VegGuiness World Records 2020; and two other children’s books (The Beast of Buckingham Palace and Bluey: Time to Play!).

Children’s bookshop owner Kristen Proud – who runs Squishy Minnie Bookstore in Kyneton, north-west of Melbourne – said it was “great news” that so many children would receive books this Christmas.

“It’s excellent that kids books are leading the way because then you’re engaging kids to be readers and hopefully that will continue throughout their life as well,” she said. “Bluey’s come off a TV show. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been around for a long time. Parents are choosing titles they know.”
