Back in December of 2016, I enjoyed seeing the Kerry James Marshall retrospective titled “Mastry,” at the Met Breuer on Madison Avenue in NYC. At the time, I wrote a blog piece about how Marshall depicted music in his paintings, which you can see here.

One of my favorite paintings in the show was “Untitled (Studio),” 2014, and I have to admit that one of my reasons for liking it so much was the way he portrayed the dog sitting under the table, looking up lovingly at the sitter posing in the studio … scroll down to see both the whole painting and a detail of the dog. If you’ve seen any of our material featuring Theo the Art Dog and his companion Violet the Expressionist Pup, then you’ll understand why Marshall’s dog caught my attention.
