Plans for a charity fundraising concert to benefit victims of the Australian bushfires have been thrown into disarray with American pop star Miley Cyrus announcing on Twitter that she was cancelling her visit to Australia.
Cyrus was due to headline the Bushfire Benefit at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne on Friday, with Grammy winner Lil Nas X and local duo The Veronicas supporting. But just before 2pm on Tuesday she tweeted that in light of the global health crisis she would no longer be travelling.
“Australia: Due to the recommendations of local, state, federal and international government authorities, including the Center for Disease Control, to reduce potential health risks in response to the current global health crisis, we are no longer traveling (sic) to Aus for the show,” she tweeted.
“I am so disappointed to not be there, but I have to do what is right to protect the health and safety of my band and crew. I will still be making a donation to help the victims of the Australian bush fire. I’m sorry to miss everyone in Australia, but I will be back soon.”
The event organisers have been contacted for comment.
