NORTH ANDOVER, MA — Last November, the New England Aquarium rescued a sea turtle stranded on an island off Cape Cod, and named her Munchkin. In July, she was healthy enough to be released back into the wild. And now, North Andover’s own Don Chapelle has brought her back to Boston — in ice sculpture form.

Chapelle, with his Lawrence studio Brilliant Ice Sculpture, sculpted Munchkin out of 12,000 pounds of ice, for the aquarium’s First Night display on the Central Wharf plaza. The sculpture is 16 feet long,6 feet wide, and 7 feet tall, and is part of a coral reef scene with seaweed and schools of fish. Chapelle has been creating First Night sculptures for the aquarium for the last 13 years.

WCVB captured video of Chapelle at work on Munchkin. The Eagle-Tribune spoke to Chapelle about the project and his history in ice sculpture.
