I have a habit of seeing things that remind me of famous artworks, like this construction site in NYC that reminded me of a Richard Diebenkorn painting. Well, it happened to me again the other day as I was walking down Franklin Avenue in Belleville. Here’s what caught my attention: the chipped paint area on the back of this traffic light … do you see any art history visual references there? (scroll down for more)

What I saw was a visual reference to the surging wave of Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” circa 1830–32, which is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Do you see what I’m seeing?
