If your Wi-Fi signal struggles to reach the farthest corners of your home, then upgrading to a mesh Wi-Fi network might be the best way to deal with your wireless black spots.
While Australia’s broadband speeds can be hit and miss, the quality of your home Wi-Fi network can have even more of an impact on your web browsing and downloads.
Rather than relying on a single wireless router to cover your entire home, mesh Wi-Fi works by plugging a primary base station into your broadband modem and then spreading a few secondary base stations around your home. The base stations work in unison and appear as a single wireless network to your devices, so they can seamlessly roam between base stations the same way your phone roams between mobile towers.
Mesh Wi-Fi networks are especially helpful if you live in a multi-storey home, with a base station on each floor ensuring more even coverage.
These mesh Wi-Fi networks operate on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, the former is better at punching through walls but the latter offers faster speeds and is less prone to wireless interference from other devices around your home, like cordless phones and microwave ovens.

VERDICT
The Synology’s Wi-Fi performance outguns its rival and tech-savvy users will appreciate its advanced features, but it’s expensive, more conspicuous and will be overkill in some homes. If your needs are simple then Google’s Nest Wi-Fi is the way to go, as long as the lack of Bridge Mode won’t impact on your NBN home phone line.
