I’m pretty sure this is not how it goes down in the actual Vatican – except perhaps in the imagination of some randy old celibate. But it sure is fun to pretend! In this trippy alternate universe, last season’s Young Pope (Jude Law) is in a coma. Tricky. He’s not dead, but the Roman Catholic Church is without a leader nonetheless. Enter the New Pope – John Malkovich – who appears ready to take things to a whole new level of weird.

Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) stars in this glossy political thriller that’s built on a meaty premise. A high level CIA exec – Carpenter – is in jail for equally high level treason. But now the FBI needs her help to track down a terrorist. A little bit Blacklist, a little bit Silence of the Lambs, but this time with a complex, clever, morally dubious woman at its centre – and in terms of plot, what soon becomes obvious are wheels within wheels.

New series ★★★½

Tuesday 14 January 8.30pm, NatGeo

So important were the 1980s in Hollywood that this new documentary series requires two episodes to cover it all. Handsome and comprehensive – and featuring a who’s who of filmmakers, commentators and critics – The Movies takes us from 1980, when films still were very much of the 1970s, right through the upheaval of the Reagan years. It’s inevitably also a story of social change. And a reminder of a time when movies, not TV shows, were the social documenter of our times.
